Er macht eine Tour über die drei bewohnten Inseln – Malta, Gozo und Comino – und taucht in die maltesische Kultur und Geschichte ein. Auch die Natur ist filmreif: Eindrucksvoll ist die Schlucht bei Xaqqa mit ihren schroffen Klippen, an denen Daniel Aßmann sich in ein Kletterabenteuer stürzt. Auf Gozo lernt er das ursprüngliche Farmleben und den Ziegenkäse kennen, für den die Region bekannt ist. Besonders interessant ist auch die Architektur auf der Sonneninsel: Der Archipel ist seit der Jungsteinzeit besiedelt, weshalb es Bauwerke aus verschiedensten Epochen und Kulturen zu bewundern gibt. Der Ggantija-Tempel auf Gozo ist Teil der Megalithkultur und gehört zu den ältesten frei stehenden Gebäuden weltweit.

Malta ist eine kleine Insel im Herzen des Mittelmeers. Die Besiedlungsgeschichte des Archipels lässt sich bis in die Jungsteinzeit zurückverfolgen. Malta stand abwechselnd unter dem Einfluss fast aller großen Kulturen des Mittelmeerraums, darunter die Phönizier, Römer und Byzantiner. Besonders prägend für die Insel waren die Belagerung der Osmanen und die Einflüsse des Malteserordens, welche bis heute in der Kultur, der Architektur und der Identität der Insel präsent sind.

Auf dem Höhepunkt ihrer Macht griffen die Osmanen 1565 die Insel an. Die Große Belagerung Maltas und die daraus folgende Schlacht zwischen den Osmanen unter Sultan Süleyman dem Prächtigen und den Johanniter-Rittern unter der Führung von Großmeister Jean Parisot de Valette dauerte fast vier Monate. Die Verteidigung Maltas durch die Ritter führte zu einer Niederlage der Osmanen und festigte den Ruf Maltas als uneinnehmbare Festung. Am 8. September feiern die Malteser auch heute noch mit einem Feuerwerk den Jahrestag des Sieges über die osmanische Belagerung.

Die Kreuzritter des Johanniterordens haben das Inselreich berühmt gemacht. Ihr Erbe lockt noch heute Touristen aus aller Welt an. Gegründet wurde der sogenannte "Souveräne Ritter- und Hospitalorden des Heiligen Johannes in Jerusalem". Die Aufgabe der Ritter war die Pflege Verletzter und der Schutz von Pilgern. Über Akkon und später Rhodos gelangten sie 1530 nach Malta. Nach ihrem Sieg über die Osmanen errichtete der Johanniterorden wehrhafte Festungsanlagen. Sie spielten eine wichtige Rolle zum Schutz der Seewege im Mittelmeer. Der protestantische Zweig der Ritter ging 1798 nach Brandenburg, der Hauptsitz des ab da Malteserorden genannten Zweiges ist inzwischen Rom. Einige Nachfahren der Helden aus der Zeit der Großen Belagerung leben heute immer noch auf Malta. Im Palast Casa Rocca Piccola hat die Adelsfamilie de Piro ihren Wohnsitz und verwahrt und pflegt dort einen Teil maltesischer Kultur.
