Across North America, local communities are taking back their mountains, redefining the spirit of skiing and snowboarding at its core. Mountains Not for Profit, a short documentary by Teton Gravity Research in collaboration with the Indy Pass, dives into the stories of four non-profit ski areas that have flipped the script on corporate-driven snow culture. Shames Mountain (BC), Whaleback (NH), Black Mountain of Maine, and Antelope Butte (WY) are proof that passion, grit, and community can keep the soul of skiing alive. These mountains thrive on volunteer effort, donations, and the sheer joy of carving turns. This is grassroots skiing at its finest—where people and purpose drive the powder days.

These mountains aren’t driven by profit—they run on something deeper. A social currency powered by the community, by people who live to ski and ride without the flashy distractions of mega-resorts. Mountains Not for Profit captures the heart and soul of these essential ski areas and the communities that keep them alive, brought to life through the award-winning storytelling and cinematic craft of Teton Gravity Research in partnership with the Indy Pass.

Understanding Nonprofit Necessity
Not every charitable endeavor requires forming a nonprofit corporation. One-time charity events and fundraisers can be conducted informally. However, long-term goals benefit from formal nonprofit status through advantages like limited liability protection, enhanced fundraising capabilities, and tax exemptions. Clarifies when incorporation is appropriate for your charitable activities.

Name Selection and Requirements
The organization's name establishes its brand identity and must meet specific legal criteria. Details how to select a compliant name that's distinct from existing corporations, avoid misleading terms, and secure both state registration and domain names.

Leadership and Governance Structure
A comprehensive breakdown of the nonprofit's organizational hierarchy, including the board of directors and officers. Emphasizes that 501(c)(3) status requires at least three unrelated directors and explains how the board collectively governs while individual directors lack independent authority. Officers like the president and secretary have specific operational responsibilities defined by bylaws.

Legal Documentation Requirements
Essential paperwork includes Articles of Incorporation, bylaws, and conflict of interest policies. Details each document's purpose and content requirements, particularly emphasizing the organizational meeting where these documents are formally adopted.

Tax Exemption Application Process
Detailed explanation of federal tax-exempt status through Form 1023 ($600) or Form 1023-EZ ($275 for eligible organizations). Outlines prerequisites including EIN acquisition and required documentation. State tax exemption requirements are also addressed, noting variations by location.

Professional Service Option
For those seeking assistance, the section discusses hiring professional services ($50-150 for basic formation, up to $1,700 plus fees for complete 501(c)(3) filing assistance). Benefits include reliable registered agent services, timely report filing, and professional guidance through the formation process.
