Hathersage, Peak District, Derbyshire, England - Join me for a village tour!
Hathersage is a village and civil parish in the Peak District in Derbyshire, England. It lies slightly to the north of the River Derwent, approximately 10 miles south-west of Sheffield.

Join us as we take a walk through Hathersage Village from the Little John Hotel and Hathersage Social Club, before heading onto Main Road and to The George Hotel and Pub.

From The George we head up Main Road, passing places like Cintra's Tearoom, Heritage Barbers, Go Outdoors shop and then up to The Crofts where we see the Tourist Information Office, Hope Valley Vets and Hathersage Fish and Chips.

Next up on this Hathersage tour is Bank House bar, restaurant and cocktail bar! Looks good to me!

Hathersage Craft Shop is seen next (minimum spend ยฃ5 if you're buying on card) and Alpkit and then Maazi Hathersage Indian Restaurant

Fanny and Clara is next where you can nip in to get yourself done up and looking your best!

At the eastern end of the Hope Valley is Hathersage, a large busy village with rich historical, industrial and literary associations.

Hathersage has become a popular place to visit for those in search of legendary heroes and literary heroines. By the south door of the church of St Michael is the grave of Robin Hood's lieutenant, Little John, who was reputedly born in Hathersage. Near the village other associated sites with the outlaw are Robin Hood's Cave, Well and Stoop. Charlotte Bronte has closec onnections with the village and it is said to be featured it in her novels. North Lees Hall is thought to have been the model for Thornfield Hall in Jane Eyre.

Hathersage was once an important centre for the manufacture of millstones, needles and pins. There are some outstanding areas of natural beauty surrounding the village, including Stanage and Burbage Edges, Offerton and Abney Moor and Bretton Clough. The river Derwent passes just south of the village at Leadmill, where there is a picturesque bridge an old country inn.

Things to do; A popular base for exploring the Hope Valley, either on foot or by vehicle, there is plenty to see and do here. Outdoor enthusiasts can walk, cycle, climb, ride and even fly nearby. Some fine old country houses like Offerton, Highlow, and Hazelford Halls are set in the spectacular countryside surrounding the village.

The Derwent Valley Heritage Trail runs close by the village. With a wealth of facilities including shops selling local crafts, foods, plants, clothing and outdoors equipment and good hotels, pubs, cafes and restaurants, it is a busy village.

Leisure facilities include an outdoor swimming pool, open during the summer, tennis courts, bowling green and a fitness and health centre. Just out of the village in the unusual Round Building is a small factory making specialist cutlery, where tours are often available and there is also a factory shop. There is a good selection of accommodation for visitors in hotels, inns, guesthouses, holiday cottages and campsites in and around the village, where there is also a popular Youth Hostel.

The village has an annual carnival in July and a Horticultural Show in August. There are regular performances, including a pantomime, by the local amateur dramatic society the Hathersage Players, and occasional concerts by the village choral society and silver band are held in the church.

In this Uk travel episode I take you around Calke Abbey in Derbyshire, England. Formerly home to the Harpur-Crewe family, over the years the house fell into a serious state of disrepair and eventually, after the death of the last family member to live here, Sir Vauncey Harpur-Crewe, the estate passed into the hands of the National Trust. Calke Abbey is such a unique property in that the National Trust decided to preserve the house in all of its decay rather than taking the option to restore it to its former glory and I love the fascinating story this tells.

Where are the worst places to live in Derbyshire? The county of Derbyshire is lovely and lovable. That is why many people love the county with its wonderful countryside. Not only that, it also has a lot of ancient landmarks and picturesque towns. The country in the middle of England has regions that boast great connections to the largest cities in the United Kingdom whilst many of its residents delight in its rural lifestyle, particularly in and around the countyโ€™s illustrious Peak District National Park. However, many people living in some of the region's towns have called out Derbyshire, claiming that those towns are the worst places to live. In this video, we look at those 8 towns considered the place to live in Derbyshire. Please enjoy the video.
8. New Mills
This New Mills, which is a town in the Borough of High Peak in the county is the best place to start from. The town 13 kilometres southeast of Stockport and 21 kilometres from Manchester, located at the confluence of rivers Goyt and Sett, is close to the border with Cheshire and the Torrs.
Now, letโ€™s take a trip to New Mills. Such a trip may also be described as a trip through New Mills. The town isnโ€™t really too good. Some have actually described it as a dump. It used to be so bad that the Council had to divide New Mills into two sub-regions, East and West. You need to know something about this: New Mills is a northern town. And donโ€™t forget also that the name suggests, the town was a cotton-spinning town with remarkable links to Manchester on its two railway lines.
Well, the town has a bus station and a bus roundabout with some random worn-out benches thrown around. It also has a staggering 13 public houses which is rather grossly insufficient for its population of 12,000. They also have two supermarkets for supposedly poor people.
7. Pinxton
This is a village nestled on the border, western boundary of between Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. Pinxton is also a civil parish in Derbyshire just south of the Pinxton Interchange located at Junction 28 of the M1 motorway. Thatโ€™s where the A38 road meets the M1. This town is also part of the Bolsover District with a population of 5,652, according to the 2021 Census. The town derives some euphoria from its Pinxton Football Club based at The Welfare Ground. It also has four secondary schools.
But then, the village is one of the worst places to live in Derbyshire because it has become the centre of a mystery that has remained unresolved for decades. This is what has thrust it into the national spotlight. Not long ago, Nottinghamshire Police reported that human remains were found in Coxmoor Road, Sutton in Ashfield. Itโ€™s not an isolated case, however. We canโ€™t forget in haste the remains of Pinxton miner Alfred Swinscoe who disappeared 56 years ago.
6. Bakewell
The next town is Bakewell, the market town and civil parish regarded by its critics as โ€œThe traffic Tokyo of England.โ€ Bakewell is known for its Bakewell pudding. The town lying on the River Wye is 21 kilometres south-west of Sheffield. In 2019, the estimated population of Bakewell was 3,695. Is it fair to describe the town as the โ€œtraffic Tokyo of Englandโ€?
Well, as you are driving into the town, perhaps on a public holiday or weekend, and crossing the beautiful Victorian bridge and entering the town centre, you may be losing daylight and may have to turn around, hence going back through the traffic in Tokyo of England. Kids are taught from childhood to ignore motorists. Such kids are accustomed to barging into any sweet shop or confectionary counter to indulge themselves without any recourse to safety on the road. Even 5-year-olds nicking some freshener or confectionary counter are carefree.
However, we find something so good about this town. Itโ€™s home to the world-famous Bakewell Tart. Its Peak District serves up an array of delicious food and drinks courtesy of its many outstanding eateries.
5. Shirebrook
The next one of the 10 worst places to live in Derbyshire is Shirebrook, a town in the Bolsover district in Derbyshire.

If youโ€™ve seen the 2005 version of Pride and Prejudice, then you most likely recognize this as Pemberley, Mr. Darcyโ€™s stately home. You may also recognize it from countless other period films and television series, as it is quite a popular filming location.

However, in real life, this historic 35,000 acre estate, is known as Chatsworth House.

Nestled in the heart of the picturesque Derbyshire Peak District in England, Chatsworth House, boasts a rich and storied history that spans centuries. Often referred to as the "Palace of the Peak," it stands as one of England's most iconic stately homes.

Welcome to our video on the top things to do in Valletta, Malta. Valletta, the capital city of Malta, is a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its rich history, stunning architecture, and vibrant cultural scene. Here are some of the best places to visit and activities to enjoy in Valletta.

Start your journey at St. Johnโ€™s Co-Cathedral, a masterpiece of Baroque architecture. This 16th-century cathedral features elaborate interiors, gilded decorations, and stunning works of art, including Caravaggioโ€™s famous painting, โ€œThe Beheading of Saint John the Baptist.โ€

Explore the Upper Barrakka Gardens, offering panoramic views of the Grand Harbour and the Three Cities. This beautiful public garden is the perfect spot for a leisurely stroll or a picnic while enjoying the scenic vistas. Donโ€™t miss the daily cannon firing at noon from the Saluting Battery below.

Visit the Grandmasterโ€™s Palace, once the residence of the Grand Masters of the Order of St. John and now the seat of the President of Malta. The palace houses the Palace Armory, showcasing an extensive collection of armor and weapons, and the State Rooms, adorned with tapestries and historical artifacts.

Discover the National Museum of Archaeology, located in the Auberge de Provence. The museum features a fascinating collection of artifacts from Maltaโ€™s prehistoric period, including the famous โ€œSleeping Ladyโ€ figurine and the โ€œVenus of Malta.โ€

Wander through the narrow streets of Valletta to admire its historic buildings and charming atmosphere. Stop by the Auberge de Castille, one of the most impressive Baroque buildings in the city, which now serves as the office of the Prime Minister of Malta.

Enjoy a performance at the Manoel Theatre, one of the oldest working theatres in Europe. This intimate and beautifully preserved theatre hosts a variety of performances, including opera, drama, and concerts, offering a glimpse into Maltaโ€™s rich cultural heritage.

Take a boat tour of the Grand Harbour to see Valletta from a different perspective. Enjoy the stunning views of the cityโ€™s fortifications, historic buildings, and the picturesque waterfront. Boat tours are a great way to learn about Vallettaโ€™s maritime history and appreciate its beauty.

Visit Fort St. Elmo, a star-shaped fort that played a crucial role in the Great Siege of Malta in 1565. The fort houses the National War Museum, where you can learn about Maltaโ€™s military history and its strategic importance in the Mediterranean.

Explore the colorful and bustling Valletta Waterfront, lined with restored 18th-century warehouses that now house restaurants, cafes, and shops. Itโ€™s a great place to enjoy a meal, relax with a drink, or simply take in the lively atmosphere.

Experience the Malta Experience, an audiovisual show that takes you through Maltaโ€™s 7,000-year history. Located near Fort St. Elmo, this informative and entertaining show is a great introduction to the islandโ€™s rich past and cultural heritage.
