📚 Work with startup nonprofits for as long as we have, and you’re bound to hear virtually every idea someone could come up with. We had a lot of fun in our last post exploring the terrible ideas people have that simply won’t work. Most are terrible not because they are twisted or underhanded, but rather they are just not well thought out.
There are, however, GREAT reasons to start a nonprofit, and here’s a few of the best ones. And if you read the “Worst Reasons” post, you may be surprised to see one entry on both lists!

Bring up the subject of a nonprofit’s bylaws and you are sure to get an interesting response. For many nonprofits, their bylaws are just some forgotten document, full of legalese, gathering dust in a file cabinet somewhere. No one on the current board of directors knows who prepared them, nor what any of the provisions mean. They certainly are not referring back to them for any reason. For a nonprofit that actively uses its bylaws, the bylaws can be an interesting glimpse into the organization’s governing psyche. Are they control freaks…or just the opposite?

How do you start a nonprofit organization? How do you manage a nonprofit organization? Starting a nonprofit sounds like a simple task but there are many steps to get there. Starting a nonprofit is so much more than filling out paperwork, it’s about having a game plan to be a strong organization from the start. This video is reference to 501c3 nonprofit organizations, so follow these steps when starting a 501c3 nonprofit.
So, get your notebook out and get ready to take notes! In this video, learn how to start up a nonprofit organization from A to Z. In this video, I will walk through how to form a nonprofit. Using my free startup nonprofit checklist as a guide (you can download that here: https://bossonabudget.lpages.co/np-checklist/
I am walking through every phase you should go through when you're starting up. If you need help doing these steps, try my nonprofit workbook which helps you keep track as you get started: https://rebrand.ly/npstartupworkbook
As I walk through this process, learn the biggest mistakes people make when starting their nonprofits.
IDEA PHASE starts at 3:01 - First we start with defining your idea. Make sure you have a fleshed out idea, and that you select a strong Board. It's also key to have a strategic plan in place along with a budget and fundraising plan.
EXECUTION PHASE starts at 12:32 - Next is the Execution phase - which means identifying the paperwork to establish and incorporate your organization.
FEDERAL AND STATE FORMS starts at 18:57 - You also need to figure out the forms that you need to get your tax-exempt status from the IRS. Learn the two forms and who’s eligible for each one. This is the process for filing for 501c3 status.
FUNDRAISING starts at 22:45 - The next phase is fundraising and the disclosures you should have in place. I also talk through the insurances you need as an organization.
INSURANCE starts at 25:55 - This involves making sure you have the right protections in place to protect your board, staff, and volunteers.
BRANDING AND COMMUNICATIONS starts at 26:48 - Next is thinking through your branding and communications and making sure you have a brand persona.
EVALUATION AND PERFORMANCE starts at 28:37 - This is about the ability you have to show your organization's impact and positive outcomes.
STAFFING AND HIRING starts at 32:02 - This section is about staffing requirements to think through what you should have in place to be prepared for staffing and hiring so you can be ready to hire when it’s time.

Even after I realized that I had to start paying myself from my nonprofit, I didn’t know how to do that. Our donations were irregular, I wasn’t landing big multi-year grants that included my salary, so I wasn’t sure how to pay myself. Do I just take more money some months and none the others? In this episode, I show you exactly how to pay yourself from your nonprofit regardless of how little revenue you are bringing in.
#nonprofit #nonprofitleadership #nonoprofitfounder
PRACTICAL AND APPROACHABLE NONPROFIT STRATEGY THAT HELPS ORGANIZATIONS GET CLEAR, GET FOCUSED, and GET FUNDING SO THEY CAN BE IMPACTFUL without being overwhelmed by all the traditional nonprofit advice. Nonprofits don’t have to be grueling and Executive Directors shouldn’t be constantly exhausted. It takes courage to step out in faith and follow a calling and I believe the world needs the solution your nonprofit offers. Running a thriving nonprofit takes leadership, strategy, program evaluation and intentional fundraising but it doesn’t need to be overwhelming. Everything you do can be maximized and leveraged to accomplish your mission in one solid, cohesive way. Stop working for a nonprofit and start working For Purpose, On Purpose.

Across North America, local communities are taking back their mountains, redefining the spirit of skiing and snowboarding at its core. Mountains Not for Profit, a short documentary by Teton Gravity Research in collaboration with the Indy Pass, dives into the stories of four non-profit ski areas that have flipped the script on corporate-driven snow culture. Shames Mountain (BC), Whaleback (NH), Black Mountain of Maine, and Antelope Butte (WY) are proof that passion, grit, and community can keep the soul of skiing alive. These mountains thrive on volunteer effort, donations, and the sheer joy of carving turns. This is grassroots skiing at its finest—where people and purpose drive the powder days.
These mountains aren’t driven by profit—they run on something deeper. A social currency powered by the community, by people who live to ski and ride without the flashy distractions of mega-resorts. Mountains Not for Profit captures the heart and soul of these essential ski areas and the communities that keep them alive, brought to life through the award-winning storytelling and cinematic craft of Teton Gravity Research in partnership with the Indy Pass.

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Chris Grundner is the president and CEO of the Delaware Alliance for Nonprofit Advancement. Since his arrival in February 2012, he has enabled the organization to nearly double its membership and significantly expand its reach. Grundner, originally from Buffalo, NY, received his Bachelors in Business Administration from the State University of New York at Fredonia. He earned his MBA from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. In 1999, Grundner moved to Wilmington to join the co-brand credit card division of First USA Bank as the Director of Business Development. Due to his significant achievements, Grundner became one of the organization’s youngest Senior Vice Presidents in early 2002. However, later that same year, his wife, Kelly, was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor at the age of 29. Grundner left his job at JPMorgan Chase in 2004 after her passing and started The Kelly Heinz-Grundner Brain Tumor Foundation in 2005 with the goal of bringing national attention to the disease. Through the foundation, Grundner has launched two brain tumor awareness initiatives – GET YOUR HEAD IN THE GAME® and Tulips Against Tumors™ – both of which became national programs when the organization merged with the National Brain Tumor Society (NBTS) in March 2010.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
Starting a nonprofit organization and wondering what board of directors roles you need to have? Here are 8 must-have board members you need for your startup nonprofit. #Nonprofit #leadership #Nonprofits
I work full time for the 501c3 nonprofit I started many years ago and recruiting great board members was a key part of making the organization a success. Having a solid board of directors will be critical in figuring out how to start a nonprofit organization, especially if you’re starting a nonprofit with no money first.
If you are starting a 501c3 charitable organization, thinking about it, or know someone who is trying to start a nonprofit, I hope this helps!
